Using ICT to support peer assessment and reflection in DCG
Video Overview
The use of benefits of technology used for assessment is discussed by a Maths Teacher. He uses Socrative to provide him with instant feedback on Maths problems. This then acts as a guide for the lesson. He can then create a video with step-by-step instructions on how to complete the sum on the blog.
Description
A mixed ability 5th year Maths class includes the use of ICT for assessment. The inclusion of ICT in assessment allows for the teacher to establish the existing knowledge of the students, before deciding the next steps in learning. The app ‘Socrative’ is used to give students instant feedback on their work. Students engage in this app using their mobile phone which saves time in sourcing other devices, logging in and various other barriers. The results are broken down for the teacher, with statistics for each topic and question available. A spreadsheet of the results can also be accessed for the teachers’ assessment files. The teacher took the commonly incorrect questions and created a step by step video for students on ‘Show Me’ to explain the content again for students. This teacher recommends the app and approach of ICT for assessment as it saves time for the teacher and also gives students ownership of their own learning and assessment.
