Scoilnet Learning Paths in the Primary Classroom

Mark Boggins, Holy Family National School, outlines how to create learning paths using Scoilnet. A learning path is a collection of online resources that share a specific topic e.g. the Famine. The teacher compiles the learning path, which pupils can access at school or at home.

Description

A learning path is a collection of resources from the ‘Scoilnet’ website. Each learning path has been created by a teacher and focuses on a specific topic. Learning paths can be used to differentiate content for students to use both in school or at home. In this class, a lesson on the famine required students to be in four groups. Group one reviewed student copybooks that contained facts on the famine that students gathered via the learning path at home. Group two read information cards on the topic, sequenced them in order and answered questions on them. Group three created a timeline, information gathered from the learning paths and books. Group four used tablets to access the learning paths to find additional information. The skill of navigating the learning paths was already pre taught. The four stations used their findings to create a project on the topic of the famine. The teacher discusses the creation of learning paths. Teachers search the ‘Scoilnet’ website for suitable websites and resources and add them to their created learning path. Teachers can include websites that include text, audio, pictures, etc. to ensure all students have access to the material. Students can access the learning paths as their teacher creates them, to enhance their knowledge on a specific subject area. Students have the freedom to select which links and websites on the learning path they wish to use to develop their content knowledge.
