The WEAVE Project

21st December 2022

The WEAVE project is a  collaboration between  DCU, SETU, Arizona State University and SFI which aims to promote engagement with computational thinking by girls in DEIS schools and co-develop a sustainable, scalable, culturally responsive Computational Thinking framework

The project co-ordinator is Jennifer McGarry, a Masters student at DCU Institute of Education.

Through the lens of cultural responsiveness, pupils in the schools are challenged to devise  a solution to a local problem that they have identified. Pupils will use Lego WeDo 2.0 and Lego Spike Essential Kits to construct a solution to their problem and subsequently bring their projects to life using block code. Pupils will also participate in the First Lego League  programme, a global STEM challenge for teams of young people, to explore a real-world theme, develop teamwork, design and programming skills – and have fun.

The schools involved are: Askea GNS, St. Catherine’s SS, Mary Help of Christians NS, Scoil Mhuire gan Smál and Our Lady of Victories. Róisín Lineen, Eoin Stakelum and Siobhán McAndew will work with these schools to support teachers in capturing and documenting the learning that takes place within each school. It is envisaged that the WEAVE project will culminate in a showcase day in DCU IoE in June 2023.
