New Online Course for SPHE and TY Teachers (Post-Primary)
18th October 2024
If you are a post-primary teacher teaching SPHE, you will be extremely interested in our new online course: ‘Teaching Online Safety in the Post-Primary SPHE Classroom’.
Transition year (TY) teachers will also find this course suitable for teaching students about online rights, risks and threats. Other related topics that lend themselves to a cross-curricular approach are also covered.
About the content of this new online course
Following on from an earlier online course with similar subject matter, we have updated the content of this course to reflect recent developments. These include legislative changes such as Coco’s law and the recently launched Bí Cineálta procedures. The course is in line with the revised SPHE curriculum at Junior Cycle, TY and Senior Cycle levels.
Oide Technology in Education collaborated with our Webwise colleagues to create the course. The content references and includes guidance on how to use Webwise’s extensive, free resources. These resources deal with topics such as sharing inappropriate images, online harassment and developing more positive relationships with each other.
The course takes just one hour of study time. You can complete it at your own pace and according to your own timeline. It is available throughout the school year, 24/7, including during school holidays.
All online course content is created to the highest professional standards by Oide Technology in Education in consultation with education and subject matter experts. It includes interactivity to increase engagement, good practice videos filmed in Irish schools and expert interviews.
Croke Park Hours
If your school management facilitates independent study as part of Croke Park hours, you can request that this new online course for SPHE teachers is factored into the school’s plans. This will enable you to engage with it as part of your fulfilment of Croke Park hours. A certificate is available once you complete the course according to the course requirements, should you need to verify your participation.
