Description
The school’s digital technologies coordinator discusses the use of ICT for teaching and learning at St. Clare’s Comprehensive School. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard, a visualiser and a computer. The first step taken was the formation of a digital strategy group, teacher volunteers who contribute to the school’s enhancement of ICT. The group includes teachers of various year levels and a range of subject specialists. The group meets every six weeks, looking at what has been happening in the school, areas of focus and the consideration of problems that may have arisen. A key element of the success of the group was ensuring that the school had adequate Wifi and internet connections. The group considered what other schools were implementing successfully; agreeing to include ‘Webwise’ and create the ICT documentation on the virtual cloud. ‘G Suite’ was chosen as an online platform as students already had emails and teachers were familiar with Google Drive. A number of teachers were using alternative online platforms but the change to one allowed for more staff training to take place as all teachers could avail of this upskilling. The need for chromebooks was essential as teachers wanted students to have access to a full keyboard when learning. A PDST advisor was assigned to the school to support them throughout this process, sharing ideas and best practices. Students have adapted well to this transition of learning, appreciating the immediate feedback that can be given, the opportunities to collaborate with peers and the overall use of technology for learning purposes.
