Digital Technologies in Le Chéile Secondary School
Video Overview
Interview with Principal discussing their student choice approach to teaching and learning. They have implemented a flipped classroom model into their school. This allows students to complete lessons in their own time and allows teachers to provide individualised feedback. Students also make their own flipped videos as a means of assessment.
Description
A secondary school principal discusses the school’s use of ICT for teaching and learning. This school is implementing a flipped classroom approach for lessons. Teachers record the lesson content for students to watch and learn the content at home. Students can then ask questions and clarify misunderstandings during class time. Teachers commonly use Kahoot to assess the students’ learning, making necessary adjustments for future lessons. Each student has an iPad for learning, allowing them to create their work in a range of different ways. Students can create a podcast, a mind map, a video, or a range of other mediums to share their work with teachers. Students participate in all subjects in first year and due to the already existing flipped videos, makes it easier for students to participate and decide on subjects they enjoy. Students virtually select each morning which core subject they would like to participate in that day; English, Gaeilge or maths. The existing teacher created videos are particularly helpful in this case as no class group will be the same each day for the teacher. When completing the core subjects, all assessments are digitised and students have eight weeks to complete them. First year, second year and transition year students also have the option to sign up to ‘Blue Sky’. Students can select from twenty different workshops to complete that look at topic areas not covered by the curriculum. This new initiative being run by the school is only possible due to the use of digital technologies. At the end of the term, these students present their new learning on the topics to their classmates. In the practical subjects, students watch a range of videos on machinery safety and must score 100% before they are allowed to use the machine. The use of technology in this school has allowed for students of all learning abilities to engage in lessons and create work they are proud of. The online platform of ‘Schoology’ is being used, where students feel welcomed in the school community on a digital level. The school has connected with other schools who are also textbook free, collaborating and sharing ideas with other teachers.
