Scratch for Reading
Video Overview
A 5th and 6th class teacher describes integrating Scratch into a literacy lesson. In Scratch, the pupils create a quiz, a news report, a character description and a prediction based on the class novel. The video also demonstrates how Scratch can support self assessment and peer assessment.
Description
Children in 5th class are studying the novel Carrie’s War. Students are divided into groups, 4 groups used laptops to complete their task, while 4 groups completed written and drawing activities. Each group that used the laptops used the app Scratch. Group one created an online quiz. Group two created a news report about the main parts of the story. Group three created character descriptions about the main character. Group four made predictions on the remainder of the story. Each group was given their task the day previous. This allowed them to establish their content first, before later inputting to Scratch. Students shared their final piece using the interactive whiteboard, allowing their peers to look at their creation and for peer assessment purposes.
